Welcome to the official website, celebrating the life & work of the late, great

1977 – 2004

Mario van Rooy, aka Mr Devious, was born in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town in 1977, and moved with his family to Mitchells Plain in 1982. Aware of the social ills in his community, he wanted to contribute positively to changing conditions.

He wanted to do this through hip hop music, which he believed to be a good tool to reach the youth. In his 20s, he became recognised for his skills and passion. As a youth worker he worked in prisons, schools and communities, and involved himself in edutainment activities.

He worked through such institutions as “Bush Radio” and “CRED” (Creative Education) with Youth at Risk programs. Renowned for his activism and social conscious lyrics, he collaborated with a number of South African hip hop artists from Prophets of da City to Brasse vannie Kaap and Skeem – having worked with projects such as HIVHOP, organisations like Baobab connections, African hip hop and CRED, he was very active in the area of social upliftment. Owing to his involvement with the HIVHOP project, Devious, together with other Cape Town artists, was invited to take part in the “Annual Living Year Book” showcase of NIZA (Nederlandse Instituut ver Zuidelike Africa) in Holland. Flying the flag of South Africa, he travelled extensively throughout Africa and Europe.

He was tragically murdered on the night of 23 January 2004. He leaves behind a widow, three children, his parents and two siblings. He is mourned internationally and leaves behind a legacy at the age of 26. Mario Van Rooy spread the message of positive change, hope and visions through his music.

After the loss of Mr Devious, the “Full Circle – EP” was released.  All proceeds of the sale of this EP goes to his children
